New Eyes
This month, Trevor Waller, the Head of Raizcorp Learning, shares his thoughts with us.
On my daily drive home, I stop at a traffic light where I am greeted by ‘Snake’, one of my favourite people. Snake sells fruit and, every afternoon, rain or shine, Snake is at his corner with a broad smile on his face, eager to ply his trade and share some words of wisdom. Snake has, I think, one of the hardest jobs in the world. Yet, he does it with a smile. Some days, I glance at the drivers around me.
Impatient, angry, frazzled and harassed, they wave Snake away as if he was a fly. And still he smiles, as he moves onto the next car. I am amazed by Snake’s resilience and his ability to maintain a positive perspective, no matter the weather (literally). Snake inspires me and I share his story with entrepreneurs because, while he may be a subsistence entrepreneur, I believe that, given the right input and resources, Snake has exactly the attitude that entrepreneurs need to succeed. He knows implicitly that his attitude determines how he sees the world.
I usually share Snake’s story in the fourth session of the “Who am I?” course. This session, called Paradigm Shift, is my favourite session because it throws the ball firmly into the court of each and every entrepreneur. Essentially, we ask the question: “Through what eyes are you viewing the world and is this perspective serving you?” The message of the session is that what you see, in the world depends not so much on what is “out there”, but on what you expect to see and know how to see. This is not to say that the trees and the traffic don’t exist. How we perceive and, therefore, how we respond to both the trees and the traffic is up to us.
It is a little-known fact that, every morning when we open our eyes and expose them to light, a chain reaction occurs in our body that basically results in all the cells of our eyes being regenerated. Imagine that – we have ‘new eyes’ every day! I am sure that scientists would argue with the precision of this but I happen to like the notion that, as I open my eyes, I have the choice to see the world anew every day. Yesterday may not have gone well but today really is a new day – so get out there with new eyes – maybe you’re not seeing what’s right in front of you or maybe you just need to re-look – with new eyes!
